Ventilation Tubes and Prophylactic

Antibiotic Eardrops

Though the use of ventilation tubes has remedied otitis media in millions of children, the procedure has complications in around 34% of cases. The complications, however, may be caused in part by infections present at the time of surgery. To avert secondary infections, some use preventative antibiotics in the short-term. Dr. Rande Lazar and his colleagues evaluated this practice with a six-month study of  200 pediatric patients – the study showed that the preventative antibiotics did not significantly decrease the occurrence of postoperative complications.
