Outpatient Adenotonsillectomy: Is it Safe in Children Younger than 3 Years?

Adenotonsillectomy can be and has been successfully been performed as an outpatient procedure, with the patient returning home the next day. Concern about using the treatment on children younger than three years old is, however, understandable. There are concerns about respiratory problems, bleeding and dehydration. Research conducted by Memphis otolaryngologist Rande Lazar shows that though young age and obstructive sleep apnea do increase the risk of some complications, there is no evidence of bleeding being more common in children younger than three years old.
